Originally a Singaporean cult favorite, restaurant Kilo jumped the ditch in 2014 and hasn’t looked back becoming a must-visit for tourists and locals alike. This Kilo Bali review will take you on a journey through their venue, menu, and staff.
Kilo’s atmosphere and staff
An oasis away from the hustle of the streets of Seminyak, the venue is an architectural enthusiast’s dream with glass-panelled walls letting the light flood in by day and illuminating the space by night. Complimentary sleek concrete and marble fittings give the space a sophisticated feel in contrast to the lush, green gardens that await your arrival. Don’t let the cool, minimalist vibe fool you. Manager, Alejandro Ledesma Mateos and team greet you with the warmest of welcomes combining the attentiveness of a fine dining restaurant with the typical friendliness of Balinese hospitality that we’ve all come to know and love.
East meets West at Kilo, Bali
With cuisine best described as East meets West, you’ll want to order the entire menu with the fare best shared. Executive Chef, Yohans Gozal, originally from Jakarta, could be considered part ‘mad scientist’ due to the thoughtful flavour pairings in his dishes – think Beef Tongue Tacos with apple-miso slaw and jalapeno butter and Crispy Soft-Shell Crab with compressed watermelon and Thai yellow curry.
Menu favorites at Kilo, Bali
Menu highlights come in the form of Crispy Baby Squid served atop perfectly cooked squid ink rice, providing us with a dish that is both textural and balanced. Or how about soft pillows of ricotta gnocchi married with shimeji and salty-but-not-too-salty miso butter which can only be described as a genius pairing. We were also a big fan of the pork ribs and kimchi potato salad which is everything it should be and more; tender, sticky and sweet with the perfect amount of heat from the kimchi.
Vegetarians fear not – the soda battered eggplant with Shanghai sauce, leeks, chilies is a firm crowd favorite and the grilled corn furikake with nori, bonito, and chipotle mayo is a Japanese take on Mexican corn that you won’t forget in a hurry.
The signature dish: steak tartare and spicy tuna tartare
If you’re feeling game, you can’t go past their signature steak tartare made with beef tenderloin and interestingly flavored with gochujang (red chili paste), and salsa verde or the fresh yet spicy wasabi tuna tartare with creamy avocado and delicate flour chips.
Dessert tips: chocolate lava cake or sticky black rice with banana
Room simply must be left for sticky black rice with banana, basil ice cream, coffee custard, and walnuts – a combination that doesn’t read well but is, in fact, the definition of a party in your mouth or the Chocolate Lava cake with vanilla Ice-cream and strawberries which wows in its simplicity.

Even more thrilling is that as of recently, Kilo Bali is open for Brunch offering an array of poke bowls and toasties alongside their take on comfort classics such as juicy lamb sausages with miso hummus, eggs, and pita and crispy fish fillet with raita, potato, dill, and salmon roe. The pressure is on venues to bring their coffee ‘A game’ and that they do, essential to any weekend brunch and if bubbles are more your thing; Jean Pierre brut is poured by the glass.
Cocktails or wine, anyone?
The wine list has depth, being sourced from wine-rich regions such as France, Argentina, and Australia. The cocktail list is extensive offering up everything from classics to their version of a ‘Magic Mushroom’ with shiitake infused vodka, homemade orange liquor, dark chocolate, lemon, homemade cacao bitters and truffle oil – it’s spiced, smoky and sour without blowing your head off.
